What is Pleural Mesothelioma?

pleural mesothelioma is a type of cancer that is usually found in people who have, at some point during their lives has been exposed to high levels of asbestos. Asbestos is a type of naturally occurring mineral that has, for many years, mixed with cement, plaster and paint, and is used inside the house. It has been used as a highly heat-resistant and surprisingly strong. Unfortunately, asbestos is made up of thin fibers that have since been found to be highly toxic to humans when they get into the body and it is these fibers can be inhaled and cause many health problems.

With regard to the manner in which asbestos is acting within the body is usually many years later that asbestos-related pleural mesothelioma was observed. Pleural mesothelioma is usually diagnosed when there is a change in a thin layer of membrane that are in the chest. When the pleural linings thicken or harden starts is known as pleural plaques. These plates are in itself not always a definite precursor to cancer, but they can greatly affect lung function and they can signal the onset of pleural mesothelioma.

pleural mesothelioma may begin in the pleura, but it can radiate out soon in the stomach, heart, and the outer wall of the chest. When this happens, and diagnosis of pleural mesothelioma has made the prognosis is not good, and many patients with pleural mesothelioma is not expected to live much longer than 12 months or so. With this in mind it is important that anyone who has had previous exposure to asbestos is tested regularly for any changes in the pleura, because it is an early sign of pleural mesothelioma can be dangerous. When pleural mesothelioma is suspected early enough, patients can be treated and it can help them live much longer than someone who has been diagnosed with full blown pleural mesothelioma.

Some of the symptoms of pleural mesothelioma have pain in your lower back, shortness of breath and pain to the side of the chest. May some people have trouble swallowing, a cough that will not go away, and in some cases the patient may even cough up blood. Some people also find that they start to lose weight very quickly after the disease sets in.

The outlook for people with pleural mesothelioma is not as good as the treatment can be quite limited due to the aggressive nature of the disease. If the disease is caught quickly enough surgery can help to remove the pleura, which are affected and the patient will live longer than someone with advanced pleural mesothelioma. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy are the possibilities that some physicians will be used to further extend the life of the patient, but that does not need to be carefully considered. Painkillers are used to the patient as comfortable as possible, and other complimentary therapies can be used.
